The Lake Jeanette Story

In the late 1800's two brothers, members of the prominent Cone family of Greensboro, North Carolina, bought approximately 2,142 acres of property from the North Carolina Steel and Iron Company. The family went on to build a manufacturing dynasty specializing in textiles with the home office located in Greensboro. As manufacturing progressed , the family realized that their company might need more water than the city of Greensboro could supply.

In 1940 the Cones began building Lake Jeanette to accommodate their need for water. The lake was named after Jeanette Cone, one of the granddaughters. The lake is fed by Richland Creek, and many other springs. Below you can see photographs taken during the initial construction of the lake. The lake has always been a "working" lake as it has always provided water for the production of denim to the Cone plants. When the lake water is high the water overflows into Lake Townsend which is one of Greensboro's reservoirs.

When Cone began developing some of the property for residential purposes they set up a subsidiary company called Cornwallis Development Company. Cornwallis started the Lake Jeanette development in the late 80's on Regents Park Lane off of Lawndale Drive. They developed several hundred lots in those original phases.

In 1992, the unified development plan for 750 acres of development was approved. In June of 1993 the first house was built in the new section of Southern Shores. In the fall of 1994 Eastern Shores was opened up and in 1995 The Point was opened and in November of 1998 Northern Shores was opened for home sales.

During this time Cone Mills decided to concentrate on manufacturing efforts and sold the assets of Lake Jeanette to Lone Star Opportunity Fund Partners X. This took place on May 7th, 1997. LSOF set up Lake Jeanette Development Company as a North Carolina company to handle the assets that they had purchased.

In 2002, Lake Jeanette Development Company transitioned into Lake Jeanette Realty and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Triad Omni Properties (TOP) www.triadomni.com . Lake Jeanette Realty specializes in Lake Jeanette community and handles all home sales (Buyers and Sellers) in the area.  We have sold more than 1500 homes in Lake Jeanette alone.
